Patna : Australia were 225/5 in 76 overs at stumps against South Africa on day one of the first test of the four-test series at Kingsmead, Durban, South Africa, on March 1, 2018, with Mitchell Marsh unbeaten on 32 in 77 balls including 7 fours and wicketkeeper Tim Paine 21 not out in 51 balls hitting 3 fours.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. But, the first Australian wicket that of opener C T Bancroft fell for 5 when the team score was 15. The second Australian wicket fell when the team score was 39 with Usman Khwaja getting for 14. Opener David Warner was out for 51 in 79 balls hitting 6 fours when the score was 95.

Captain Steven Smith fell to spinner Keshav Maharaj when the team score was 151. Smith was out for 56 in 114 balls hitting 11 fours. Keshav Maharaj also took the wicket of  Shaun Marsh, who made 40 in 96 balls hitting 6 fours. The fifth Australian wicket fell when the score was 177.

For South Africa, pacer Vernon Philander and spinner Keshav Maharaj took wickets each. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took one wicket.
