Patna : Resuming at their overnight score of 269/6, South Africa were all out for 335 before lunch on the second day of the second cricket test against India at SuperSport Park, Centurion, South Africa, on January 14, 2018, with spinner Ravichandra Ashwin taking 4/113 in 38.5 overs and fast bowler Ishant Sharma taking 3/46 in 22 overs. Mohd Shami took 1/58. Two South African batsmen : Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander, were run out on January 13. India were 4 for no loss in one over bowled by S Africa before lunch.

For South Africa, openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar scored 94 and 31 respectively while Amla made 82 and A B de Villiers 20. Captain Faf du Plessis was bowled for 63 by Ishant Sharma on January 14.  Sharma took the wickets od de Villiers, du Plessis and Kagiso Rabada while Ashwin took the wickets of Elgar, Markram, Quinton de Cock and Morne Morkel. Shami took the wicket of spinner Keshav Maharaj, who made 18. Rabada made 11 and Morkel 6. Pacer Lungisani Ngidi remained not out on one. South Africa had won the toss and elected to bat on January 13.
