Patna : Electing to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa were 64/3 after 16 overs in the first test against India at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa, on January 5, 2018, with A De Villers batting on 37 in 40 balls hitting 8 fours and Captain Faf du Plesis batting on 17 hitting 3 fours in 33 balls.

South Africa made a terrible start to the first test as three of its batsmen had returned to the pavallion with the team score reading at 12 only. All the three South African wickets were taken by seam and swing bowler Bhuvaneshwar Kumar although he was also hit for 4 fours in his fifth over by former South Africa captain A de Villiers.

South Africa opener Dean Elgar, who had scored over 1,000 runs in test in 2017, was out on the third ball of the day to Kumar for duck. The second wicket of Aiden Markram fell at 7 and the third wicket of  Hashim Amla at 12. Markram made 5 and Amla 3.

Kumar had taken 3/29 in 7 overs. But, Kumar had taken all his three wickets in his first four overs ( 3/7). Jasprit Bumrah made his test debut in the test while South African fast bowler Dale Steyn also returned to the test side after a year. Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Lokesh Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane were not picked for the test.
