Patna : Fiftyseven per cent polling was recorded in bypoll to Araria parliamentary seat in Bihar till 5 pm on March 11, 2018. In Bhabua and Jehanabad Assembly constituencies in Bihar the bypolls to which were also held the same day, the voters turnout was 54.03 % and 50.06 % respectively, according to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Bihar,  Ajay V Nayak. The polling was peaceful, the CEO said

The ruling JD(U)-BJP combine and RJD-Congress alliance are  locked in a battle for the Araria Lok seat and the two Assembly constituencies. This is the first electoral battle in the state after CM Nitish Kumar walked out of the Grand Alliance in July 2017 and joined the BJP-led NDA.

The by-poll to the Araria parliamentary seat was necessitated by the death of RJD MP Mohd Taslimuddin. The contest is mainly between RJD’s Sarafaraz Alam, Taslimuddin’s son, and BJP’s Pradip Kumar Singh, who had won the seat in 2009 and finished runner-up in 2014.
