Patna : The 4th test between Australia and England at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, Australia, ended in a draw on January 9, 2022. Chasing a target of 388 runs, England scored 270/9 in 102 overs in their second innings with opener Zak Crawley scoring 77 runs and all-rounder Ben Stokes scoring 60 runs to take England to a fighting draw. England were required to score 358 runs on day 5 to win the match. Australia had declared their first innings at 416/8 and second at 265/6. England had scored 294 runs in their first innings.

Australian batter Usman Khwaja, 35, who scored two centuries in the match ( 137 & 101 not out) to reach his 10th ton in tests, was  named Player Of The Match. Australia had won the toss and opted to bat. Australia lead the five-match Ashes series 3-0 having won the first three tests.

Resuming at their overnight score of 30/0, England lost their first wicket that of opener Haseeb Hameed with 46 runs on board. Hameed fell to fast medium bowler Scott Boland for 9. Dawid Malan was bowled by spinner Nathan Lyon foe 4 making it 74/2. Zak Crawley fell lbw to medium fast bowler Cameron Green for 77 making it 96/3. Captain Joe Root and Ben Stokes added 60 runs for the 4th wicket. But, Root fell to Boland for 24 and it was 156/4. Stokes and Jonny Bairstow then added 37 runs for the 5th wicket. Stokes fell Lyon for 60 making it 193/5. Stokes had scored 66 runs in first innings

Jos Buttler fell lbw to fast bowler Pat Cummins for 11 and it was 218/6. At the same score fast bowler Mark Wood also fell lbw to Cummins for zero making it 218/7. Bairstow, who had scored 113 in first innings, fell to Boland for 41 in 105 balls with 3 fours  and it was 237/8. Spinner Jack Leach fell to part-time bowler Steven Smith for 24 in 34 balls with 2 fours and it was 270/9. Leach and Board  ( 8 not out) added 33 runs for 9th wicket.  For Australia, Boland took 3/30 in 24 overs while Pat Cummins and Lyon took two wickets each.
