New Delhi : In an alarming development, a total of 35,871 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in India in last  24 hours, the highest daily spike this year, taking the tally 1,14,74,605 cases  at 8 am on  March 18, 2021. The new cases were 18,130 more than the number of recoveries. Only 17,741 Covid-19 patients were declared cured / discharged in last 24 hours in India taking the tally to 1,10,63,025 on March 18, 2021.

The active cases (2,52,364) on March 18, 2021, accounted for 2.20% of the total Covid-19 cases (1,14,74,605) recorded so far in India, an increase of 17,958 cases in last 24 hours. India has tested 23,03,13,163 samples so far including 10,63,379 samples on March 17, 2021. On the other hand, 3,71,43,255 persons have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in India so far including 20,78,719 beneficiaries on March 17, 2021.

Of the 1,14,74,605 Covid-19 cases recorded so far in the country, altogether 1,10,63,025 patients have been declared cured with the recovery rate (RR) dropping to 96.41% on March 18, 2021.

The Covid-19 toll climbed to 1,59,216 in India on March 18, 2021, with 172 new deaths being recorded in the country in last 24 hours including 84 in Maharashtra, 35 in Punjab, 13 in Kerala, 8 in Tamilnadu, 6 in Chhattisgarh, 4 in Karnataka, 4 in Haryana, 3 in Delhi, 3 in Gujarat, 3 in Telengana, 2 in Madhya Pradesh, 1 in West Bengal, 1 in Uttar Pradesh, 1 in Bihar,  and 1 in Andhra Pradesh. India had recorded 188 new deaths on March 17, 2021, according to Union Health Ministry figure.

The Covid-19 toll in India on March 17, 2021, was : Maharashtra (53,080), Tamilnadu (12,564), Karnataka (12,407), Delhi (10,948), Andhra Pradesh (7,186), Uttar Pradesh (8,751), West Bengal (10,298), Gujarat (4,430), Madhya Pradesh (3,893), Rajasthan (2,791), Punjab (6,172), Telengana (1,662), J&K (1,977), Haryana (3,083), Bihar (1,554), Odisha (1,918), Jharkhand (1,094), Assam (1,099), Uttarakhand (1,704), Kerala (4,435), Chhattisgarh (3,915), Puducherry (673), Goa (812), Tripura (391), Chandigarh (359), Andaman & Nicobar (62), Himachal Pradesh (1,011), Ladakh (130), Manipur (373), Nagaland (91), Meghalaya (148), Arunachal Pradesh (56), Sikkim (135), Mizoram (11), Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (2), and Lakshadweep (1).
