Gopalganj: Gopalganj police intercepted a boat in river Gandak coming from Uttar Pradesh to Bihar carrying huge consignment of liquor from the neighbouring state late on November 30 night. Two persons were arrested in this connection.

Police sources said that Gopalganj SP Ravi Ranjan Kumar received inputs about liquor smuggling through river route and he constituted a special task force (STF) team under the leadership of Jadopur ps SHO Rakesh Mohan. Police said that STF team laid a trap on the bank of river Gandak at Semrahi ghat and later Gopalganj SP himself reached there at around 1.30 am  on December 1.

Police said that as the smugglers reached Semrahi ghat, the police team surrounded them. Though some of the smugglers managed to escape under the cover of darkness, police seized 296 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), 1,025 bottles of countrymade liquor besides two bikes from the boat.

The arrested persons were identified as Jailal Yadav, a native of Barharwa in East Champaran, and Hario Sahni, a native of Jadopur Bhatwa. Senior police officers were interrogating the arrested persons while another police team was carrying out raids to arrest their other associates, who had escaped. Gopalganj SP said that the district police are keeping an eye on the network of liquor mafia and soon the mastermind would be arrested.

It may be mentioned here that several trucks carrying liquor from Haryana, Himanchal Pradesh and Punjab, were intercepted and liquor seized on different routes of Gopalganj district earlier.
