Muzaffarpur : A record 27 women were elected councillors in the 49 member Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation (MMC) the elections to which were held on May 21, 2017, and results declared on May 23. Of the 49 ward councillors, 38 have won for the first time.
Sanjiv Chauhan, husband of outgoing Mayor Varsha Singh, has been elected as ward councillor while former Deputy Mayor Nissaruddin was defeated. Another former Deputy Mayor Majid Hussain and his wife also suffered defeat in the MMC polls. Mayor Varsha Singh did not contest the poll this year.
With the results of MMC polls out, the race has begun or the post of Maor and Deputy Mayor. Dinesh Singh, MLC, former MLA Vijendra Chaudhary, former Mayor Samir Kumar and JD(U) leader Bhushan Jha have reportedly joined hands to get their candidate elected as Mayor . BJP MLA Surendra Sharma, on the other hand, trying to get his own candidate elected as Mayor. In fact, there are five candidates in the race for the post of Mayor.
The winners in the MMC polls include Suresh Kumar Pappu, Gayatree Chaudhary, Rakesh Singh Pintoo, Hariom Kumar, Seema Kumari, Javen Akhtar Guddu, Sushma Devi, Shashi Devi, Einamul Haq, Abhimanyu Kumar, Pramila Devi, Shahnaz Khatoon, Sunita Bharti, Ratan Sharma, Anju Kumari, Pawan Ram, Vikas Sahni, Sanju Devi, Nirmala Devi, Sanju Kejriwal, K P Pappu, Sanjiv Chauhan, Ranju Sinha, Surbhi Shikha, Rupam Kumari, Gita Devi, Reshmi Ara, Saleha Khatoon, Abha Ranjan, Priyanka Sharma, Gargi Singh, Shabana Parveen, Seema Jha, Archana Pandit, Neelam Gupta and Shahid Khatoon,
