Bagaha : Two Homeguards jawans : Arjun Yadav, a resident of Jurapakar under Bhairoganj police station, and Hiralal Kushwaha, a resident of Malpurwa under Bagaha town police station, deployed at Harnatand forests range in Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve (VTR) in West Champaran district in North Bihar were axed to death on January 27, 2019, morning, by poachers.

Sources said that a team comprising 7 Homeguard jawans deployed at Naurangia Forest Sub-Beat under Harnatand forests range in Valmikinar Tiger Reserve in West Champaran district, who were on patrolling under Sector 28, noticed a poacher laying wildlife trapping net. The team seized the net and caught a poacher. Meanwhile, the arrested poacher, in local language, called other members of poachers’ gang, who immediately appeared at the scene and hit three Homeguards jawans injuring them seriously. Two of them later died while the third injured jawan Pradip Mahto of village Laxmipur Chiutaha is under treatment.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Forest Division-2, Gaurav Kumar Ojha confirmed the death of two Homeguards jawans in the incident and said that it was a matter of investigation as to why the Homeguards jawans had gone on patrolling duty without  forest staff.

When  contacted, Bagaha SP Arvind Kumar Gupta said that the jawans had gone on patrolling duty because the Forester was  on leave. A case  has been lodged with Gobarahiya police station against unknown in connection with the incident. The bodies were brought over to Sub- Divisional Hospital, Bagaha, for autopsy.
