Patna : The 1st test between India and New Zealand (NZ) ended in a thrilling draw on day 5 at Green Park, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on November 29, 2021, as the host failed to take the last NZ wicket in 8.4 overs in the last hour of play although Ravindra Jadeja took 4/40 in 28 overs and Ravichandran Ashwin took 3/35 in 30 overs. Shreyas Iyer was named Player Of The Match for scoring 105 runs in first innings and 65 runs in 2nd innings.
All credit to Rachin Rachindra (18 not out) and Ajaz Patel (2 not out) for saving the test for NZ by the skin of their teeth playing out the last 8.4 overs. India had won the toss and opted to bat and scored 345 runs in their first innings and declared their 2nd innings at 234/7.
Chasing a target of 284 runs, NZ could score just 165/9 in 98 overs with opener Tom Latham, who had scored 95 runs in the first innings, scoring 52 runs. William Somerwille fell to fast bowler Umesh Yadav while captain Kane Williamson fell to Ravindra Jadeja for 24. Ross Taylor also fell to Jadeja for 2 while Henry Nicholls fell to spinner Axar Patel for 1. NZ had scored 296 runs in their first innings.
