New Delhi : To contain Covid-19 pandemic, Indian Railways had discontinued all passenger carrying trains w.e.f March 23, 2020. In view of the prevailing situation, only special trains with limited stoppages, keeping in view the suggestions and concerns of State Governments and health advisories, are being operated.
As on August 1, 2021, Indian Railways, on a daily average basis, operated 6,166 special train services which included 1,517 Mail/Express trains and 846 Passenger trains, according to a PIB release.
Indian Railways is keeping a close watch on the prevailing situation and regulating operation of train services accordingly. This information was given by Railways, Communications and Electronic & Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on August 6, 2021.
