Patna : Altogether 1,076 temples in the country are under the protection of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). They include 242 in Karnataka, 132 in Uttarr Pradesh (UP), 120 in Tamil Nadu, 96 in Madhya Pradesh (MP), 89 in Maharashtra, 53 in Andhra Pradesh, 52 in Odisha, 48 in West Bengal, 42 each in Gujarat and Rajasthan, 29 in Chhattisgarh, 29 each in J&K and Uttarakhand, 28 in Himachal Pradesh, 18 in Assam, 11 in Kerala, and 5 in Bihar.

This information was given by Minister of State (I/C) for Culture and Minister of State for Environment, Forest & Climate Change Dr Mahesh Sharma in a written reply in Lok Sabha on March 27, 2018, according to a PIB release.
